Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
अंग्रेज़ी में यह “Glimpses of World History” के नाम से छपी।

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

What is SIR, and why is the opposition against it?

Image
For several months the term SIR has been in the news, debated in Parliament, on the streets and in the Supreme Court. Here is a simple explanation of what SIR is, why the Election Commission is doing it, and why the opposition objects. What is SIR? SIR stands for Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) of the Election Commission go from house to house and re-verify every voter. The Commission draws this power from Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act. The last intensive revision of this kind took place between 2002 and 2004. What has happened so far? The first phase took place in Bihar between June and September 2025, and about 47 lakh names were removed from the rolls. The second phase ran from October to December 2025 in 9 states and 3 Union Territories. There, the number of voters fell from 50.99 crore to 45.81 crore, a drop of about 10 per cent. The largest deletions were in Uttar Pradesh ...

From field to granary: what each PM did for farmers

Image
At Independence, India depended on other countries for food grains. Today it produces more than 35 crore tonnes of grain and has been the world's largest milk producer since 1998. This change is the result of decades of policy and the hard work of farmers. Here is what major steps were taken for farmers under each Prime Minister. Nehru (1947–64) The First Five-Year Plan gave top priority to agriculture and irrigation. Large dams such as Bhakra and Hirakud were built. In 1960 the country's first agricultural university opened at Pantnagar. Lal Bahadur Shastri (1964–66) Amid food shortages and the 1965 war, he gave the slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan". In 1965 the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) were set up, and the foundation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system was laid. Indira Gandhi (1966–77, 1980–84) The Green Revolution came in her time. With high-yielding seeds, irrigation and fertilisers, wheat production ...

India's 23 IITs: under which PM were they set up?

Image
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are the country's most prestigious engineering institutions. The journey that began at Kharagpur in 1951 has now reached 23 IITs. Here is which IIT was set up under which Prime Minister. Under Nehru (5 IITs) The first IIT opened at Kharagpur in 1951. It was followed by Bombay (1958), Madras (1959), Kanpur (1959) and Delhi (1961). Other countries helped build these institutes: Bombay with the Soviet Union, Madras with West Germany, Kanpur with the United States and Delhi with Britain. Under Narasimha Rao and Vajpayee (2 IITs) IIT Guwahati started in 1994 under the Narasimha Rao government. In 2001, under the Vajpayee government, the University of Roorkee was given IIT status. Under Manmohan Singh (9 IITs) The largest number of new IITs came under the Manmohan Singh government. In 2008 IITs opened at Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Patna, Ropar and Jodhpur. 1 dollar = how many rupees? 1947 to 2026

Image
Social media often claims that in 1947 one rupee was equal to one dollar. That is not correct. At Independence the rupee was linked to the British pound, and one dollar was worth about ₹3.30. Today, in October 2026, one dollar is worth about ₹94.92. Here is the dollar rate in the era of each Prime Minister. Rate by year (approximate annual averages) ₹3.30 in 1947 and ₹4.76 in 1964 (Nehru). ₹7.50 in 1966 and ₹8.38 in 1975 (Indira Gandhi). ₹11.36 in 1984 and ₹16.23 in 1989 (Indira and Rajiv Gandhi). ₹22.74 in 1991 and ₹35.43 in 1996 (Narasimha Rao). ₹41.26 in 1998 and ₹45.32 in 2004 (Vajpayee). About ₹61 in 2014 (Manmohan Singh to Modi). And ₹94.92 in 2026 (Modi). Two major devaluations In 1966 the Indira Gandhi government devalued the rupee, and one dollar rose from ₹4.76 to ₹7.50. In 1991, during the foreign exchange crisis, the Narasimha Rao government made the rupee about 18 per cent cheaper. Both times the government took the decision itself. Why does the rupee fall? India bu...

Petrol, LPG and gold: 2004 to 2026

Image
Rising prices are the biggest worry in every household. How much have the prices of petrol, cooking gas and gold changed in the last 22 years? Here is a comparison at three points: May 2004 (Vajpayee to Manmohan Singh), May 2014 (Manmohan Singh to Modi) and October 2026. Petrol (Delhi, per litre) Petrol cost ₹33.71 a litre in May 2004, ₹71.41 in May 2014 and ₹102.12 in October 2026. That means prices rose by about 112 per cent between 2004 and 2014, and by about 43 per cent between 2014 and 2026. Cooking gas (Delhi, 14.2 kg cylinder) In May 2014 a subsidised cylinder cost ₹414. In October 2026 it costs ₹942. Today ordinary consumers get no subsidy, while Ujjwala beneficiaries get ₹300 off. So the subsidy difference must be kept in mind when comparing the two prices directly. Gold (24 carat, 10 grams) The average price of gold was about ₹5,850 in 2004 and about ₹28,006 in 2014. In October 2026 gold is at about ₹1.48 lakh per 10 grams. Gold prices are set by the world market, not ...

ISRO's big missions in every PM's era

Image
In 1963 India's first rocket was launched from Thumba, a small village in Kerala. Today India has reached the Moon, Mars and the Sun. This journey belongs to no single government; it is the result of decades of effort and the dedication of scientists. The beginning: Nehru and Indira Gandhi The Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) was formed in 1962, and the first rocket was launched from Thumba in 1963. ISRO was founded in 1969. India's first satellite, Aryabhata, went into space in 1975. In 1980 the SLV-3 rocket launched the Rohini satellite, India's first satellite on its own rocket. In 1984 Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian in space. A strong foundation: 1979 to 2001 The Bhaskara-1 satellite was launched in 1979 under the Morarji Desai government. In 1988, under Rajiv Gandhi, the first remote sensing satellite IRS-1A went up. In 1994, under Narasimha Rao, the PSLV had its first successful flight; it went on to become ISRO's most reliable r...

Which PSUs were set up under which government?

Image
PSUs, or public sector undertakings, are companies in which the government holds a major stake. Here is a selected list of major PSUs and the government under which they were formed. Under Congress governments In the Nehru era (1947–64), more than 20 major PSUs were set up, including SBI, LIC, ONGC, BEL, Indian Oil and Hindustan Steel. HAL, BHEL and BEML were formed in 1964. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) was set up in 1965 to buy and store grain. In 1969 the Indira Gandhi government nationalised 14 large private banks. Under Manmohan Singh, IIFCL and DFCCIL (dedicated freight rail corridors) were formed in 2006, and BBNL (BharatNet), to take internet to v...

India's 23 AIIMS: under which government?

Image
AIIMS, the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, are among the most trusted government hospitals and medical colleges in the country. India now has 23 AIIMS. There is often a debate over which government built how many. Here is the full list of which AIIMS was approved under which government. Under Congress governments (2) The first AIIMS was created in Delhi in 1956 by an Act of Parliament under the Nehru government. Later, in 2009, the Manmohan Singh (UPA) government approved an AIIMS at Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. Shared credit of both governments (6) In 2003 the Vajpayee (NDA) government announced six new AIIMS under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Their approval and construction took place between 2006 and 2012 under the Manmohan Singh (UPA) government, and they started in 2012. These six are Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), Patna (Bihar), Raipur (Chhattisgarh) and Rishikesh (Uttarakhand). So it would not be fair to...

From prison to temple of learning: the first IIT

Image
Today the IITs are India's most prestigious engineering institutions. But did you know that the first IIT began in a building where the British once imprisoned freedom fighters? Hijli Detention Camp Near Kharagpur in West Bengal, the British ran a detention camp at Hijli where freedom fighters were held without trial. In September 1931 police opened fire on unarmed prisoners in the camp, and two prisoners were killed. The incident was protested across the country. A new beginning After Independence the country needed large numbers of engineers and scientists to build dams, factories, power plants and roads. A committee led by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar recommended setting up higher technical institutes. Following this, on 18 August 1951, India's first IIT began in that same old building at Hijli. The first batch had 224 students, and there were 42 teachers in 10 departments. Nehru's words At IIT Kharagpur's first convocation in 1956, Nehru said that where the Hijli Det...

When villages got their own rule: Panchayati Raj

Image
Today the village sarpanch, the gram sabha and panchayat elections seem ordinary. But in the early years after Independence, most decisions on village development were taken in Delhi and in state capitals. Villagers' voices were rarely heard. Panchayati Raj changed that. The Balwant Rai Mehta Committee In 1952 the government launched the Community Development Programme for village development, but people's participation in it remained low. A committee headed by Balwant Rai Mehta was set up to review it. In 1957 the committee recommended that villagers themselves should decide on their development, through elected bodies at three levels: village, block and district. The start at Nagaur On 2 October 1959, Gandhi Jayanti, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru launched Panchayati Raj at Nagaur in Rajasthan. Nagaur became the first district in the country to implement it. Gandhiji had spoken of "Gram Swaraj", self-reliant villages, which is why this date was chosen. Andhra ...

Independent India's first general election

Image
At Independence, many people around the world doubted that democracy could work in a country with so much poverty and so little literacy. The first general election of 1951–52 proved them wrong. It was the largest election in the world at the time. The first election in numbers There were about 17.3 crore voters. For 489 Lok Sabha seats, 1,949 candidates from 53 political parties contested. About 1.96 lakh polling stations were set up across the country. The election was held in 68 phases and lasted about four months, from October 1951 to February 1952. Why was it historic? From the very first election India gave the vote to every citizen over 21, rich or poor, man or woman. In many Western countries women had won this right only after long struggles. Literacy then was only about 18 per cent, so each candidate had a separate ballot box of a different colour and an election symbol, so that even voters who could not read could vote easily. Nehru and Sukumar Sen Nehru saw this elec...

Nehru's books

Image
Jawaharlal Nehru was not only a politician but also a writer. His books are still read to understand history and India. Remarkably, his three biggest books were written in prison. During the freedom struggle Nehru spent about nine years in jail in all. Letters from a Father to His Daughter In 1928 Nehru wrote about 30 letters to his 10-year-old daughter Indira. They tell, in very simple language, how the Earth was formed, how life began and how human civilisation developed. It is considered the simplest book for sparking children's curiosity about science and history. Its Hindi translation was done by Premchand. Glimpses of World History Between 1930 and 1933, while in prison, Nehru wrote about 200 letters to Indira containing the history of the whole world. They were published as "Glimpses of World History". What makes it special is that it looks at world history not from Europe's point of view but from that of Asia and India. It is very useful for students. An...

Nehru's foreign policy

Image
At Independence the world was split into two blocs: the American camp on one side and the Soviet Union on the other. Newly independent India faced the question of which side to join. As Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Nehru chose a third path. Non-alignment The core of Nehru's foreign policy was not to join any bloc. India did not enter either the American or the Soviet camp and took decisions in its own national interest. This did not mean staying neutral; it meant holding an independent view on every issue. Panchsheel In 1954 India and China agreed on five principles of peaceful coexistence, called Panchsheel: mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence. Opposition to colonialism India spoke out openly, at the United Nations and elsewhere, for the freedom of colonised countries in Asia and Africa and against apartheid in South Africa. Major...

20 PSUs set up under the Nehru government

Image
At Independence India had no large factories or power plants, and no strong system of its own banks and insurance. The private sector lacked the capital and technology for big tasks such as steel plants or oil exploration. So the Nehru government chose to set up government companies, or PSUs. Nehru called such projects "the temples of modern India". Industry and steel ITI was set up in Bengaluru in 1948 to make telephone equipment. HMT came in 1953, making machine tools and later becoming famous for its watches. Hindustan Steel (now SAIL) was formed in 1954 and built steel plants at Bhilai, Rourkela and Durgapur. Heavy Electricals (now BHEL) came in 1956 and the Heavy Engineering Corporation in Ranchi in 1958. Energy and mining The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) was set up in 1948 for flood control, power and irrigation. In 1956 came ONGC for oil and gas exploration, Neyveli Lignite, and NCDC for government coal mining. NMDC for iron ore mining followed in 1958, and In...
