The Story of My Experiments with Truth: Summary of Gandhi's Autobiography

"The Story of My Experiments with Truth" is Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography and one of the most widely read books in India. Gandhi wrote it in Gujarati as "Satyana Prayogo athva Atmakatha". It was published weekly in his journal Navajivan from 1925 to 1929. It was translated into English by his secretary Mahadev Desai. The book covers his life from childhood to 1921.

Childhood and Marriage

Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar. He was married to Kasturba at the age of 13. In the book he openly admits his childhood mistakes, such as secretly eating meat, smoking and stealing. Once he confessed in a letter to his father, and his father's tears taught him the meaning of true repentance.

London and Law

In 1888 he went to London to study law and kept his promise to his mother to stay away from meat and alcohol. He became a barrister in 1891 and returned to India, but did not succeed as a lawyer at first.

South Africa: The Turning Point

In 1893 he went to South Africa for a legal case. At Pietermaritzburg station he was thrown off a train despite holding a first-class ticket. This humiliation made him resolve to fight injustice. In 1906 he began Satyagraha there, resisting injustice through truth and non-violence.

Return to India

He returned to India in 1915. In 1917 he led the Champaran Satyagraha for indigo farmers in Bihar, his first major movement in India. The autobiography ends around the events of 1921.

Main Lessons

The first lesson is truth and non-violence. The second is to admit mistakes openly and learn from them. The third is simple living and self-discipline. The fourth is peaceful but firm resistance to injustice. Gandhi described the book not as a life story but as the story of his "experiments with truth".

Why Read It?

The book shows how an ordinary, shy boy became the "Mahatma" through honesty and constant self-examination. It is an inspiring book on self-improvement for students and every reader.
