What is TRP?

What is TRP?

TV channels often claim to be "number 1". That claim is based on TRP. TRP, or Television Rating Point, is a kind of "marksheet" for TV channels. It shows how many people watched a channel or programme, and for how long.

Who releases it?

In India, TV ratings are released by BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council). It has been releasing ratings since 2015 and is the country's only rating agency. It works under rules of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and usually releases reports every week.

How is TRP measured?

An inaudible code, a "watermark", is inserted into the audio of every channel. In about 71,000 selected homes across the country, a meter called a BAR-O-meter is attached to the TV. This meter detects the watermark and records which channel is playing. Each family member presses their own button on the remote to show that they are watching. From the data of these homes, an estimate is made for viewers across the country and the rating is prepared.

How do channels benefit?

A channel with higher TRP gets higher advertising rates and attracts big brands. Channels also use TRP to decide which shows to run and which to drop. The tag of "number 1 channel" also builds viewers' trust.

Controversy too

In 2020 Mumbai Police alleged a "TRP scam" in which some households with meters were paid to keep certain channels on. After this case, questions were raised about the credibility of the rating system.

The new 2026 policy

Under the government's new TV Rating Policy 2026, the number of metered homes will rise from 50,000 to 80,000. Programmes watched on smart TVs and OTT will also be counted. Views from channels that open automatically when the TV is switched on, the "landing page", will no longer be counted. Ratings have been on hold since July 2026, as BARC's registration under the new policy is still pending (as of October 2026).

A lesson for viewers

Higher TRP does not always mean better journalism. Sensational news is often watched more, so when choosing a channel, consider its credibility too.
