Starlink and India
In October 2026 a statement by Elon Musk sparked a debate about Starlink in India. Here is what the dispute is about, what Starlink is, and its benefits and concerns.
What is the dispute?
Elon Musk said on X that some powerful people (oligarchs) are blocking Starlink in India to protect their monopoly, and that this is a "crime" against the people of India. The Ministry of Communications replied that the allegations are baseless. According to the ministry, Starlink, Jio-SES and OneWeb are all at the same stage, and spectrum will be allotted only after security checks are complete.
What is Starlink?
Starlink is the satellite internet service of Elon Musk's company SpaceX. Thousands of small satellites orbiting about 550 km above the Earth deliver internet directly to a small dish on the roof. No mobile tower or cable is needed. Starlink has more than 9,000 satellites in space and can offer speeds above 100 Mbps. Musk claims Starlink is licensed in more than 165 countries.
How much will it cost in India?
In December 2025, Starlink's website showed prices for India of ₹8,600 a month and a one-time ₹34,000 for the dish/kit, with unlimited data and a 30-day trial. The company described these as "test data". The final price for India has not yet been announced.
Benefits
Internet can reach remote villages, mountains and islands. Connections can be set up immediately during disasters such as floods and earthquakes. There is no cost of laying towers and cables. A new company will increase competition and give a boost to online education and telemedicine.
Concerns
The service is expensive, while mobile data in India costs about ₹11 per GB. There are concerns about national security and data surveillance, and about dependence on a foreign company. Speeds can drop in heavy rain or with obstructions, and satellite capacity is limited in densely populated cities.
Conclusion
In cities where cheap mobile and fibre internet already exist, Starlink's impact will be small. The real difference will be in areas that still lack a good network.
