One false report, many questions

On 17 October 2026 a controversy involving ABP News and folk singer Neha Singh Rathore came to light, reopening the debate on the responsibility of the media.

What happened?

On ABP's digital platform, a defamatory report was run in which Neha Singh Rathore's name and photo were attached to a video of a police raid. Within a few hours ABP admitted that the report was "factually incorrect", expressed regret for the "wrong broadcast" and apologised.

Neha's response

Neha Singh Rathore did not accept the apology as enough. She said, "Not an apology, I want justice; we will meet in court." She also asked the National Commission for Women to intervene. Neha alleges that she was targeted for questioning the government, while the channel has called it a mistake.

What does it mean?

In the race to show news first, fact-checking is often left behind. A false report reaches lakhs of people in minutes, but an apology does not travel as far. The damage to a person's reputation is hard to repair. A false allegation against a woman's character hurts most deeply. Incidents like this also weaken the credibility of the media as a whole. Many senior journalists and media experts have asked how this mistake happened and who is responsible.

What does the law say?

Under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, defamation can be punished with up to 2 years in jail, a fine, or both. The affected person can also file a civil suit for damages.

Where to complain?

Complaints about news channels can be made to their self-regulatory body, the NBDSA (News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority). In matters involving women, the National Commission for Women can be approached, and if needed the police and courts are also available.

The lesson

Verify first, then broadcast: this is the first rule of journalism. There is a lesson for viewers and readers too: before forwarding any shocking news, check whether it is true.

Based on ABP's clarification on X and media reports (up to 18 October 2026).
